I've been reloading pistol, but now that I just picked up a new Mini, it looks like I need to get into rifle reloading. My Mini shoots. I was using cheap Federal bulk stuff from Walmart. The Mini throws brass about 30 feet and most of it has a dent about half way down the casing.
You can see it in the attached photo. With rifle reloading, will this dent mean the case is no longer reloadable? Attached Images. July 3rd, , AM Caeb As long as the brass will run through a gauge after resizing, you should be fine. That will iron out when you fire it.
I would be a little more diligent in checking for cracks, though Dave MP. Warp, Look here for info on controlling the brass tossing. July 3rd, , AM BlackBart. Done many MANY 06 with dents like yours, never a problem. A little fireform never hurt.

Alphatreedog Tier Potato. Full Member. Feb 15, 4, 8, I'm new to reloading as I just took the plunge beginning of this year. Started with 9mm and that has worked out better than I could have ever imagined. Now I'm prepping my first load of. The majority are consistent and I beliwve from my AR's brass deflector. My question is , does any dent in a case mean that it's no good? I read Reloading Handbook as suggested for where to start and it says to inspect brass for damage and dents.
Is there a curve. Here is a pic. What do you think. WeiserBucks Sergeant Full Member. Feb 13, 1, 1, Weiser , Idaho. I agree , brass deflector.
Proceed with confidence sir , won't effect anything. May 5, Should be OK to go May 7, 4, 2, Bought a FAL not long ago and it dents up the brass pretty good. Would like to reoad it for my bolt.
Anyone got any experiance with this? Sizeing die takes care of case mouth but what will happen when i fire a rnd with a dent in the side of the case? Also, the FAL likes to chew up the rim upon extraction If the dents are not a "cut" where the integrity of the case wall is reduced then firing will iron out any dents.
On cases with dinged up extractor rims I most often use a flat smooth file and file down any burrs. If the rims are bent I file the case head smooth before sizing the case.
FAL's have a tuneable gas port. If you don't have the small wrench to adjust it, a mighty grip with your fingers will do provided the rifle's gas system is cleaned an lubed.
You can easily see how the gas block works. The larger the window gets, the more gas it vents to the atmosphere as opposed to the action. Just open it up a little at a time until the rifle starts ejecting the brass without beating the crap out of it. The old school way was to shut it most of the way down. Then with an empty magazine in place you open it up one notch at a time until the bolt stays open from the magazine with every shot.
Then add one more slot's opening for good measure. I can't remember where I got mine or who makes it. I got it like 30 years ago. Dented brass. Notice the number on the case written with a Sharpie. Same cases after firing. Dents will fireform out. Scratches and gouges like this end a cases life. Do not reload if they look like this. My FAL reeks havoc on cases.
