How many creature types are there in magic

With famous examples including Snapcaster Mage , Dark Confidant , Vendilion Clique and so many more, the Wizard creature type has done very well over the years. And, of course, the most populous creature type is none other than Human — and by a huge margin, too.

Humans are enormously solipsistic you think so too, right? Or is it just me? Kind of. There you have it — the 10 most common creature types in Magic. What do you think? Do you disagree? So, which ten creature types come out on top? These massive black creatures tend to be both expensive and selfish, which makes them awkward to build a tribal deck around. Instead, various powerhouse demons can be slotted into any deck with black mana. Demons can whisper all kinds of forbidden secrets into your ear, and they are masters at drawing cards in exchange for life, tutoring for cards, or slaughtering everything around them, friend and foe alike!

When the dust settles, the demon can then swoop in to victory on their batty wings. The total opposites of demons in every way, angels would rather have a battalion of friends around and lead the charge. Angels are worshiped by many, and they reward steadfast faith with lifegain, power and toughness boosts, and more. Angels also typically have flying and lifelink, and they may have vigilance or first strike as well.

Some of them, such as these two, are positively loaded with special abilities. Legendary multicolor angels, such as Gisela and Sigarda, also make for good commanders.

What exactly is an elemental, anyway? That's the idea At first, early elementals represented earth, wind, fire, and water They also come in all mana costs, so it's easier to build an elemental-only deck than an angel-only deck or demon-only deck.

They often have synergy, such as those from Lorwun and Shadowmoor , and the likes of Omnath, Locus of Rage and Animar, Soul of Elements make for excellent commanders, as angels do. When Arcbound Ravager first saw print in Darksteel, it did not include any subtypes. The importance of universal subtyping has played a major role in what Magic has become and obviously adds a ton to the strategic depth of the game.

Tribal synergies may be taken for granted now, but it took a lot of revision over decades to get right. In the olden times, creatures with the type Wall had a special rule that prohibited them from attacking.

Now, Walls have an ability called defender written on the card that specifies the creature cannot attack. So Mistform Ultimus and creatures with Changling now have the subtype Wall but do not have the ability defender. They are Walls that can attack! It cannot be regenerated. Mistform Mask was a useful Draft staple in its time because it could be used to enchant a creature an opponent controlled. You could then activate the ability of the enchantment to give the opposing creature the Wall type so it would be unable to attack.

I wanted to end my stroll down creature subtype lane with a few of my favorite examples of tribal gone wild. So the name is a little confusing but here it goes… Hyalopterous is a word typically used to describe insects with transparent wings and a Lemure refers to spirits of unburied dead exorcised from homes in early Roman rituals. The iconic illustration lives on but Hyalopterous Lemure now skulks around the battlefield as a Creature — Spirit.
