An LED has a positive lead know as the anode and a negative lead known as the cathode. The cathode is marked on the rim of the LED body with a flat area shown in the diagram. Another way to tell which lead is the anode and which is the cathode is to look at the two plates at the end of the leads inside the body of the LED. The bigger plate will be the cathode. Never connect an LED directly across a battery or other power source — it will burn out.

The smaller plate indicates the positive anode lead ; the larger plate belongs to the negative cathode lead. In short, wiring in series divides the total power supply between the LEDs. Wiring them in parallel means that each LED will receive the total voltage that the power supply is outputting. LEDs are diodes and diodes can only allow electrical current to flow in one direction, therefore LEDs are polarised. It is very important that LEDs are connected to a circuit in the right direction.
